The Best Fall Flowers That Last All Season Long

What flowers last the longest?

Preserved flowers last the longest — about a year. Real blooms picked at peak and preserved need no water or sunlight. Among fresh flowers, chrysanthemums and alstroemeria last two to three weeks; a standard fresh bouquet lasts seven to ten days.

Which is the difference between replacing an arrangement every week from Labor Day to Thanksgiving and living with one that is still beautiful next August. This is a roundup of the second kind, drawn from Fall Blooms.

What makes preserved different from dried

Dried flowers lose their moisture and their color at the same time, which is why they end up brown, brittle and dusty. Preservation is a different process: the sap is replaced with a plant-based solution that keeps the petal soft and locks the pigment in place. The flower stays pliable and stays the color it was on the day it was picked.

Every Eternity® Bloom is a real flower, grown for us and hand-picked at peak bloom by botanical experts at our partner farms, then preserved at peak beauty. Not silk. Not dried. Real, and stopped at its best hour.

The pieces that carry the whole season

Blackberry Eternity® Roses

The season's deepest rose, and the one clients ask for by name. Saturated berry with plum and violet undertones — near-black in low light, unmistakably a flower up close. The most versatile of the fall hues because it works against black, marble and stone equally well.

Start with the Large Round Black Classic in Blackberry for scale, the Small Round Black Classic in Blackberry for a table or counter, the Large Square Black Classic in Blackberry for a straight line, or the Amphora Black Porcelain in Blackberry if you want the vessel to be part of the gift. Shop Eternity® Roses.

Burgundy Eternity® Roses

An icon, deepened for fall. Rich, wine-toned and velvety, and the least literal fall color in the collection — it has no holiday attached to it, so it still looks right in February. The Large Round Black Classic in Burgundy is the version most people send; the Tazza Black Porcelain in Burgundy sits low enough for a dining table.

Eternity® Hydrangeas in fall hues

Fall color in full dimension. The hydrangea's naturally voluminous silhouette takes a deep shade and turns it into something abundant but still refined — the piece to choose when you want presence rather than precision.

The Thalia Porcelain Vase in Blackberry Smoke, the Terre Travertine Vase in Bordeaux, or the same vessel in Blackberry Smoke. Shop Eternity® Hydrangeas.

Cerise Noir Eternity® Peonies

New this fall, and the reason peonies are possible in October at all. Cerise Noir is a softly shadowed mauve with notes of plum and violet — the first dark hue we have ever offered in our most coveted floral, grown exclusively for us and hand-picked at peak bloom in Japan.

Available as the Thalia Porcelain Vase in Cerise Noir with 15 to 18 preserved peonies, and the Fleura Porcelain Vase in Cerise Noir with 12 to 13. Quantities this season are extremely limited. Shop Eternity® Peonies.

Nocturne Rosé, the mixed composition

The complete color story in one arrangement: Cerise Noir peonies grounded in Blackberry Eternity® Hydrangeas, lifted by mauve-pink two-tone Eternity® Roses and our signature Blackberry Eternity® Roses, layered with green ivy and purple caspia for movement. Layered color, sculptural form, extraordinary longevity.

The vessel as the long-lasting part

Worth saying plainly: a preserved arrangement leaves you with the vessel, for good. The Gia Marble Vase is black and white marble, weighs nine pounds and carries a bronze plaque at its base — whether in Nocturne Rosé or Midnight Berry. It sits with the permanence of an object rather than an arrangement, which is the point.

How to make them actually last a year

  • No water. Ever. Water is what undoes preservation.
  • Out of direct sunlight. UV is the only real enemy of a deep pigment. A north-facing room or an interior wall is ideal; a sunny windowsill will fade Blackberry faster than anything else on this list.
  • Away from humidity. Not a bathroom, not beside a kettle or a steam oven.
  • Dust gently. A soft brush, or a hairdryer on cool from a distance. Never a damp cloth.
  • Do not compress the petals. Preserved petals are soft, not rigid. Lift by the vessel, never by the blooms.

Frequently asked questions

What flowers last the longest?

Preserved flowers last about a year, far longer than anything fresh. Among fresh flowers, chrysanthemums and alstroemeria last two to three weeks, and a standard fresh bouquet lasts seven to ten days.

Do Eternity® Roses really last a year?

Yes. They are real roses hand-picked at peak bloom and preserved at peak beauty, so they need no water and no care. Kept out of direct sunlight and away from humidity, they hold their shape and color for a full year.

What is the difference between preserved and dried flowers?

Dried flowers lose moisture and color together and become brown and brittle. Preserved flowers have their sap replaced with a plant-based solution that keeps petals soft and holds pigment in place.

Are Eternity® Flowers real?

Yes. Every bloom is a real flower, grown for Venus et Fleur and hand-picked at peak bloom at our partner farms, then preserved. They are not silk and not artificial.

Do preserved flowers need water?

No, and they should never be watered. Water undoes the preservation. They need no water, no sunlight and no trimming for a full year.

What are the best long lasting flowers for fall?

Preserved roses, hydrangeas and peonies in deep seasonal hues — Blackberry, Burgundy, Bordeaux and the new Cerise Noir mauve peony. They cover September through the holidays in a single arrangement.
