The Ultimate Fall Flower Guide: What's in Season and What to Gift

What flowers are in season in the fall?

Fresh fall flowers in season from September to November include dahlias, chrysanthemums, asters, marigolds, celosia, amaranth, garden roses, hydrangeas turning to antique tones, and ornamental branches. Peonies, tulips, lilacs and ranunculus are out of season in fall unless preserved.

That is the short answer. The longer one is more useful, because "in season" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

The fall flower calendar

Early fall, September. The overlap month, and the best one. Dahlias are at their peak, garden roses are having a second flush, hydrangeas are drying on the bush into greens and dusty pinks. Anything you buy now still looks like late summer with the color turned down.

Mid fall, October. The month fall actually looks like fall. Chrysanthemums, asters, celosia and amaranth, plus the first branches — oak, beech, ornamental berry. Color moves from bright to deep: burgundy, plum, oxblood, bronze.

Late fall, November. The field gives up very little. What remains is preserved material, evergreen, seed heads and berry. This is the month the table starts to matter more than the garden, and the month most gifting happens.

What is not in season in fall

Peonies, tulips, ranunculus, lilac, sweet pea and lily of the valley are all spring flowers. If you are offered fresh ones in October they have been flown in from the southern hemisphere at considerable cost, or they are silk.

This is the one place we can be genuinely useful, because it is the constraint our whole business exists to solve.

Can you get peonies in the fall?

Yes, if they are preserved. Fresh peony season runs about eight weeks in spring, so fresh peonies are out of season in fall. Preserved peonies are picked at peak bloom in that spring window and preserved, so they are available year-round and last a full year.

Our Eternity® Peonies are grown exclusively for Venus et Fleur and hand-picked at peak bloom by botanical experts at our partner farms in Japan, then preserved rather than dried — which is why they stay soft and hold their color instead of going brown and brittle.

New this fall is Cerise Noir, a softly shadowed mauve peony with notes of plum and violet, and the first dark hue we have ever offered in our most coveted floral. It comes in the Thalia Porcelain Vase in Cerise Noir and the Fleura Porcelain Vase in Cerise Noir.

What are the best flowers for fall?

It depends what you are asking the flowers to do.

For a room you live in through the season: preserved. Fresh arrangements need replacing every seven to ten days. One preserved arrangement holds a room from Labor Day through the holidays, without water and without attention. Fall Blooms is built for exactly this.

For a gift: deep color, and something that will still be there at Thanksgiving. Burgundy and Blackberry are the two shades that do this without looking tied to a specific holiday.

For a single evening: garden roses or dahlias from a good local grower have a brief, particular beauty, and they are lovely alongside a preserved piece that stays.

The fall palette, and what to gift in it

Burgundy — rich, wine-toned and warm. The most versatile of the three, and the one that works for a housewarming, a closing gift or a thank you without reading as seasonal. Try the Large Round Black Classic in Burgundy or the Terre Travertine Vase in Bordeaux.

Blackberry — saturated berry with plum and violet undertones, dark and dimensional. The shade to choose when you want the gift to be noticed. Beautiful in volume as the Thalia Porcelain Vase in Blackberry Smoke, or as the Amphora Black Porcelain in Blackberry.

Cerise Noir — the new mauve peony. The choice for someone who already has everything in red. Quantities are extremely limited.

Nocturne Rosé — all three, layered in one composition. The Gia Marble Vase, the Large Round Black Classic or The Grand Venus.

How to care for fall flowers so they last

For fresh: recut the stems on an angle every two days, change the water, keep them out of the fruit bowl's ethylene and away from heating vents.

For preserved: nothing. No water, no sunlight, no trimming. Keep the arrangement out of direct sun and away from humidity — not in a bathroom, not on a windowsill — and dust it occasionally with a soft brush or a hairdryer on cool. That is the entire routine, for a year.

Frequently asked questions

What flowers are in season in fall?

Dahlias, chrysanthemums, asters, marigolds, celosia, amaranth, garden roses, antique-toned hydrangeas and ornamental branches. Peonies, tulips, ranunculus and lilac are spring flowers and are out of season in fall unless preserved.

Can you get peonies in the fall?

Yes, if they are preserved. Fresh peony season runs about eight weeks in spring. Preserved peonies are picked at peak bloom in that window and preserved, so they are available year-round and last a year.

What are the best flowers for fall arrangements?

Preserved roses, hydrangeas and peonies in burgundy, blackberry or mauve, which hold a room for a full year without water. Among fresh options, dahlias and garden roses are at their best in early fall.

What flowers last the longest?

Preserved flowers. Real blooms picked at peak and preserved last about a year, against seven to ten days for a fresh bouquet. Among fresh flowers, chrysanthemums and alstroemeria last longest at two to three weeks.

What is the best fall flower to gift?

A deep, non-literal color in a vessel worth keeping. Burgundy and Blackberry read as seasonal without being tied to a holiday, so the arrangement still looks right in December and January.

When should I order flowers for Thanksgiving?

By the middle of November for fresh, since the week itself is the busiest of the season. Preserved arrangements can be ordered any time, since they will not open early or wilt while they wait.
