Now that the new year is in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start thinking of the year ahead and all of the chances to celebrate with your loved one. Valentine’s Day is an especially important holiday for couples, however, if you’re in a long-distance relationship, it may be difficult to find time to see each other or even talk on the phone.

While it’s definitely better to spend time with your loved one in person on Valentine’s Day, sometimes that’s just not in the cards. If you’re stuck spending V-Day without your love, the very least you can do is give them a call first thing in the morning. This way, even if you aren’t able to spend time with them in person, they can at least hear your voice. If you really want to go the extra mile, make it your mission to be the first person they hear in the morning and the last person they hear before they go to bed. Even if you don’t talk for a long time, at least your S.O. will fall asleep thinking of you.
Being separated from your partner for long periods of time is difficult, especially if you’re separated on the most romantic day of the year. If you want to give your love something heartfelt and romantic that they can enjoy throughout the year, then you may want to consider writing them notes with special instructions. Fill envelopes with messages and gifts, and instead of letting them open all of the letters at once, write instructions of when they should open it on the outside of the envelope. For example, you can write a letter with instructions that say “when you’re missing me” on the outside, and your S.O. can open it up to find a picture of the two of you. The great thing about this gift is that it is low-cost, you can tailor it to fit your partner’s life, and your partner can enjoy it on different days throughout the year!
Regardless of the situation that is keeping you and your loved one apart this Valentine’s Day, it’s important that you take some time to at least talk to your S.O. If you really want to go above and beyond, try to plan a date with your sweetheart where you can eat dinner together while video chatting. You can go all-out to create the illusion that you’re actually on the date, but either way, taking some time out of your busy schedule to see your partner’s face and talk to them will really show how much you care.
If distance is the only thing keeping you and your significant other apart on Valentine’s Day, then shorten the distance by buying them a ticket to come see you! February 14 is one of the most romantic days of the year, and you should spend it with the person you love. Instead of spending the day apart from the one you love, go ahead and make the big romantic gesture and buy them a ticket to wherever you are. You can surprise them a few days before Valentine’s Day so that they have time to prepare, or if you know there are other circumstances that may prevent them from coming, take it upon yourself to travel to where they are!
