Preserved Peonies That Last a Year: Inside Our Eternity® Collection

The peony has the shortest season of any flower we work with. Eight weeks in late spring, and then it is gone until the following year — and a cut peony, once it arrives, gives you five to seven days before the petals drop. Preserved peonies were born out of impatience with that math. Each stem is hand-picked at peak bloom by botanical experts at our partner farms in Japan, then carried through a preservation process five years in the making, one that holds the colour, weight and full ruffled form of a fresh peony for up to twelve months.
The result is not a replica. It is the same fabled, temperamental bloom people have loved for a thousand years — simply given the time to be looked at, rather than raced against.
Why peonies are the hardest flower to preserve
Ask any florist and they will tell you the peony is notoriously fickle. Its dense, layered petals bruise easily, and the flower moves from tight bud to blown open in a matter of days. That instability is exactly why adapting our preservation process to the peony took five years of research. Like snowflakes, every peony blossom is singular — the irregular, wave-like shape of each petal is part of what makes the flower beautiful, and part of what makes it so difficult to hold in place.
The process replaces the natural moisture inside each stem with a plant-based solution that locks in structure, texture and hue. No water. No sunlight requirement. No upkeep beyond an occasional dusting. Because the bloom is preserved rather than replaced every few days, a preserved peony arrangement also asks far less of the planet than fresh flowers do — none of the refrigerated shipping, none of the waste that comes with a bouquet built to be thrown away.
Grown by hand in Japan
Every Eternity® Peony begins as a real, living flower, grown exclusively for Venus et Fleur at partner farms in Japan — a region chosen for a centuries-long tradition of cultivation that has produced some of the world's most breathtaking blossoms. Each stem is hand-selected at the precise moment of peak bloom, then arranged petal by petal by our master designers.
Sweet and complex, the peony's scent carries soft, powdery, rose-like notes over base tones of deep vanilla, offset by verdant edges of crisp citrus, fresh-cut grass and dewy green leaves. With preservation, that character no longer belongs to any single season.
Living with preserved peonies
What a peony that lasts a year looks like in a home depends on what you are drawn to. For the flower entirely on its own terms, there is the Sylvie Porcelain Vase, four peonies sized for a desk or bedside; the Fleura Porcelain Vase at twelve to thirteen stems for a console or entryway; and the Thalia Porcelain Vase, fifteen to eighteen peonies for a room that calls for presence.
Paired with other blooms, the peony takes on a softer register. Our Peony Poésie palette cradles peonies alongside Eternity® Roses and Hydrangeas — found in the Large Round Parisian hat box, the Fleura and Thalia porcelain vases, and the hand-carved Terre Travertine Vase, where every vein in the stone is as one-of-a-kind as the bloom it holds.
Quieter and more ethereal is Peony Étoile, where Eternity® Snowflake Hydrangeas and ivory garden roses radiate outward from the peony like a halo. It appears in the Large Round, the Fleura and Thalia porcelain vases, the Terre Travertine Vase, and our handwoven wicker trunks — the Coffret de Fleurs, Peony Étoile and Coffret de Fleurs, Peony Poésie.
For the moments that call for scale, peonies anchor our tallest vessel: the Grand Venus, made to order over five hours by our in-house floral artisans and finished with a debossed coat of arms at its base. And for the scent alone, there is the Eternity Peony Candle and its companion votive — white peony, rose accord and muguet.
What peonies symbolize
Few flowers carry the weight of history as gracefully as the peony. Messengers of regality, good fortune and grace, peonies boast a horticultural pedigree extending back over a thousand years, with an especially rich cultural presence throughout East Asia.
They have featured prominently in art and literature across the globe — in the delicate strokes of Mary Cassatt's Peonies and the vibrant swirls of Van Gogh's Peonies and Iris, and as metaphors for love, beauty and transcendence from Tang Xianzu's The Peony Pavilion, where the bloom stands for the ephemeral nature of life and love, to D.H. Lawrence's The White Peacock, where it evokes mysticism and enchantment.
In the language of flowers, peonies of every colour communicate honour, nobility, happiness, wealth and beauty — though each hue carries a meaning of its own. White peonies connote new beginnings and innocence, while pink peonies carry an added spirit of joy, romance and good fortune. Known through history for their calming properties, peonies also send a quiet message of peace.
